Hohenzollern Redoubt During the Battle of Loos
WWI trench model in 1:48 scale
As the final project for an illustration class at Georgia State University, we were asked to illustrate a passage from a book. I chose the memoir of a British officer at the 1915 Battle of Loos. I was able to find somewhat contemporary aerial photography, archaeological dig reports, and even trench maps from both sides to inform my design. The red rectangles on the maps represent the roughly 96 foot by 192 section of Hollenzollern Redoubt I have represented in this 1:48 scale (2 foot by 4 foot) sculpture. The names on the street signs are taken from German trench maps and a number of historically accurate construction techniques are represented on the trench walls.
